Susan Jean Smith

Susan Jean Smith, of Hartford, was born on Jan. 26, 1950, in Madison, Ill., to Eugene and Ruea (Covey) Williams.

Susan passed away on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph, at the age of 73.

On March 19, 1983, she was united in marriage with William Smith. She was formerly employed at ES Enterprises of Keeler, worked at Burns Security, loved working in her flower garden, but most of all taking care of her grandkids.

Susan leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, William; eight children: Janene VanAvery, Stacey Mulson, Lee Smith, John VanAvery, Kimberly Moore, Billy Smith, Amanda Clark, and James Smith. She is also survived by her mother, Ruea; twenty four grandchildren; twenty seven great-grandchildren; and five siblings: Stanley Williams, Debbie Harris, Linda Simmons, Ruea McGee and Gina Santos.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene, a sister, Margaret and two brothers: Gary and Eugene.

As per Susan’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 18, at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford where a memorial celebration of Susan’s life will be held immediately following.
