Shirley Jean Schroyer

June 8, 1927 — November 22, 2015


Shirley Jean Schroyer, 88, of Bangor passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at home.


Shirley was born June 8, 1927, in Hartford, the daughter of Curtis and Jean (Humphrey) Drake. She grew up on Van Auken Lake and lived in Bangor for most of her life. She later returned to live on the lake after retirement. Shirley earned a master's degree in education. She taught remedial reading in the elementary grades, and was a member of Bangor Bible Church and Hartford Federated Church. She loved to entertain, especially to a full house of guests, and loved traveling with her husband, Donald. She was honored as Woman of the Year in Bangor in 1985.


Shirley was united in marriage to Donald Schroyer on Oct. 11, 1952. Donald passed away Oct. 30, 2008. Also preceding Shirley in passing were her parents; her stepmother, Pansy Drake; and two brothers, Virgil and Donald Drake.


Shirley is survived by a son, Paul (Sharon) Schroyer of Stanwood; a daughter, Jean (Rev. William) Bass of Chesterton, Ind.; six grandchildren: Dan (Hope), Samantha and Matthew Schroyer, and Ruth (Jonathan) Ficaro, William and Mae Bass; a brother, Curtis (Irene) Drake of Hartford; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.


The family will welcome friends from 5-7 p.m. today, Nov. 24, at Hartford Federated Church, where a celebration of life service will commence at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25. Shirley will be laid to rest in Arlington Hill Cemetery in Bangor.
