Roy "Andy" Anderson was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Chicago. He was one of three children born to Roy and Hulda (Stelter) Anderson. Roy passed away at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in Royalton Township on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at the age of 92.
Roy grew up in Bridgman, and attended Bridgman High School, where he participated in a variety of athletics. He was a member of the 1945 Class C state championship basketball team. After graduating from Bridgman High School in 1945, he was drafted into military service. His service included guard duty at Dachau prison camp and the military police at the Nuremberg Trials.
After retiring from Clark Equipment, he enjoyed his retirement years playing golf, growing vegetables for his roadside stand and partnering in a driving range. He was also a member of the Hartford Zoning/Planning Commission in the 1980s.
Roy stayed interested in athletics throughout his life. He was best known for his prowess at golf, winning countless tournaments and trophies that attest to that. He was also the golf pro at Bridgman Country Club for a time.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service to honor Roy's memory will commence at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Hartford United Methodist Church with Brian Lightner officiating. He will be laid to rest with his parents and sisters in Greenwood Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., with military rites provided by Stevensville American Legion Post 568. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hartford United Methodist Church or Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bridgman. On June 5, 1976, Roy was united in marriage with Donna Vanderlyn-Smith. She survives, along with his children: Bradley (Hannah) Anderson, Steven Anderson, Kay (Rick) Martin, Mark (Angelita) Anderson, James (Christine) Anderson and Scott (Denise) Smith; nine grandchildren: David, Evan, Mike, Chris, Angela, Shawn, Ryan, Amanda and Bethany, 15 great-grandchildren; and his first wife, Catherine D. Anderson.
Roy was preceded in passing by his parents; and two sisters: Betty Jane Anderson and Loie Rokely.
Roy's family would like to thank the staff at Caretel Inns of Lakeland; Caring Circle, Hospice at Home; and especially Stephanie Burch for the loving care they showed Roy.
