Ronald M. Smithley, 79, ascended into Heaven on Monday morning, Sept. 23, 2013, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.
Ron, as he was known by most, was born Nov. 24, 1933, in Marion, Ind., the son of Melvin and Agnes (Herreld) Smithley. During the Depression, Ron spent 18 months in the Mary Freebed Rehab Home in Grand Rapids. On Aug. 22, 1953, he married the former Dorothy Downs. For many years they owned and operated the Ron-Dot Floral Shop in Hartford. Ron was a longtime and faithful member of Hartford Federated Church, and he liked to hunt and travel, especially going up to the bridge.
Ron is survived by his children: Mark (Donna) Smithley and Gregg Smithley both of Hartford; five grandchildren: Brandon Smithley of St. Louis, Mo.; Daniel Smithley of Niles; Toni Smithley of Flint; and Tyler Smithley and Brier Smithley, both of Hartford; 11 great-grandchildren: Khole, Brooke, Danyelle, Dirk, Nastasia, Alex, Lilly, Alex, Aiden, Katierra and Camron; a sister, Janie (Larry) Wetzel of Hartford; and a sister-in-law, Kaye Smithley of Benton Harbor.
Ron was preceded in passing by his wife, Dorothy, in 2010; his parents; two sisters, Louise Robinson-Glidden and Peggy Johnson; and three brothers: Ed, James and Roy Smithley.
