Richard Clare Melvin

August 27, 1930 — October 14, 2018


Richard C. "Dick" Melvin, 88, of Hartford, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Oct. 14, 2018, at home surrounded by loving family. He was born Aug. 27, 1930, to Clare J. and Anna (Nielsen) Melvin in Bloomingdale.


Dick is survived by his wife, Maxine (Gourdie); two sons, Richard G. (Janet) Melvin of Lawrence, and Timothy W. (Lynne) Melvin of Vicksburg, Mich.; a daughter, Lisa R. Buddemeier of Hartford; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Melvin of Grand Rapids; a brother, Raymond Melvin of Bloomingdale; and two "adopted" daughters, Nancy Spoula and Marsha Kelly. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.


Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Douglas and William; a brother, Robert; a grandson, Steffen; two granddaughters, Karrie and Lorri; two nieces, Susan and Kathryn; and a sister-in-law, Margaret.


Dick worked for 20 years at Watervliet Paper Co. and Newton Falls Paper Co. in upstate New York as a coated paper consultant. He traveled the entire United States and parts of Canada. He was an active member in the Methodist church for 73 years.


A memorial service to honor Dick's memory will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Hartford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ryan Wenburg serving as officiant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, P.O. Box 1092, West Seneca, NY 14224 or to the church.
