Raymond E. Camp was born Nov. 20, 1921, to Edwin and Marie Camp. He left this world on April 7, 2016, to join Dorothy, his wife of 69 years, to play another round on that big golf course in the sky.
He lived most of his life in Watervliet, where he and Dottie raised their five children: Roberta Abbott, Charlene (Gary) Whitney, Bill (Christine) Camp, Craig Camp and Penny (Mark Carlock) Camp. Ray was also blessed with eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife; he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Abbott; one brother, Robert Camp; and many special hunting and fishing buddies.
After graduating from high school, Ray joined the Army, where he served as a medic in World War II in North Africa and Italy. He then earned a degree in forestry from Michigan State University. He was a past member of the Lions Club, Watervliet American Legion and for many years served on the board of education at Watervliet; enabling Ray the special moments of personally presenting his children with diplomas during their graduation ceremonies.
Upon retirement from the State of Michigan, Ray and Dottie wintered for 22 years in Tavares, Fla., where they golfed, fished and enjoyed being with their "snowbird" friends. Whether it was hunting a deer or a morel mushroom, fishing in a boat or through the ice or recalling the Latin names of the trees surrounding him, Ray was happiest in the great outdoors. Ray "Grouchy Cook" will be missed.
Per Ray's wishes, he has been cremated and no memorial service will be held. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, North Berrien Senior Center or Hospice at Home. Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford is assisting the family with arrangements. Those wishing to leave memorial condolences for the family may do so at http://www.calvin-leonardfh.com. The family would like to thank the staffs of Woodland Terrace in Coloma, Niles and Bridgman for the care and love given to their father.
