Nancy Susan Shelton

Nancy Susan Shelton, of Hartford, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at Caretel Inns in St. Joseph, after an eleven month battle with stage four brain cancer.

Susie, as she was known by all, was born on July 14, 1950, in St. Joseph to Louis and Jewel (Teague) Vaughn. On August 14, 1968, she was united in marriage to Denny Shelton. She was a graduate of Hartford High School, proudly served twelve years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, worked in sales most of her life, owned and operated Denny’s Recreation and the Green Lantern Caffe both in Hartford, had her real estate license and sold real estate through Rudell Real Estate in Hartford, had a travel agent license and booked travel through a private club in St. Joseph and finally retired from SBC-Ameritech where she started as a billing specialist in their Kalamazoo Call Center and worked her way up to a customer service lead.

Susie is survived by her husband, Denny of Hartford; her two daughters: Rebecca (Tosh) Struwin of Benton Harbor, Nicole (Steve) Little of Hartford, and a son; Denny Shelton Jr., of Hartford. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; her mother, Jewel Vaughn of Hartford; and a sister; Michelle (Jim) Anders of Holland.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Leimbach; her father, Louis; and a brother, Terry Vaughn.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Hartford General Baptist Church, followed by the celebration of life service to honor Susie’s memory, with Pastor Steven Bisbee officiating. Susie will be laid to rest in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford. The family has entrusted the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with arrangements.
