Marla Dee (Sheick) Thurman, 74, of Hartford passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, at her home.
Marla was born on April 12, 1950, in Mt. Morris, Mich., the daughter of Marvin and Lucille (Richards) Sheick. She was united in marriage with Glenn Thurman on Dec. 26, 1968. Marla grew up in Mt. Morris and attended Mt. Morris High School where she excelled in athletics.
After high school, she worked multiple jobs. She attended St. Joe Beauty School in 1984 to earn her cosmetology degree. She worked at a local beauty shop located in Watervliet before starting her own business Design & Cuts at her home in Hartford in 1986, which she ran for approx. 36 years before retiring. She also was senior pastor at New Life Harvest Ministries from the year 2000-present.
Marla’s passions that brought her joy were her faith, family, friends and missionary work in India. With the help of the church, donors and volunteers they built schools, churches and raised money for people in need.
Marla is survived by her son, Craig Thurman; one brother, Tom; and three sisters: Melissa, Cindy and Debbie. Marla was preceded in passing by her husband, Glenn; her parents; two sisters: Caroline, Joanne; and five brothers: Dallas, Tyrone, Stan, Ron and John.
