Marcella Taylor Hoffman

August 7, 1935 — March 10, 2016


Marcella Taylor Hoffman, 80, of Hartford passed into the arms of Jesus on March 10, 2016, at Riverview Manor after a long illness.


Marcella was born in 1935 to John and Hilda (Emery) Taylor of Grand Rapids. Their large family often performed at musical events. Her siblings were Marian Derwich, John Taylor, Emmett Taylor, Catherine Chesebro, Robert Taylor, Leonard Taylor, and also Jean Weed, who survives her. After graduating from high school in Wyoming, Mich., Marcella became a legal secretary and also owned several businesses. In later years, she wrote four Christian novels in the Hearts in Harmony series, inspired by her experiences during the Depression. Marcella served several years as a Salvation Army missionary with her husband, David, who preceded her to Heaven. She also participated in a mission trip after Hurricane Katrina with her son, Eric.


Besides her sister, Jean (Larry) Weed of Caledonia; she is survived by her children: Sherry (Tom) Kuyt of Hudsonville, Susan (Phil) Blum of Lawton, Clifford (Eva) Snider of Soldotna, Alaska, and Eric Overweg of Decatur; stepchildren: Steve (Kathy) Snider of Albuquerque, N.M., Sheila (Devon) Schindler of Grand Rapids, Harvey (Shelley) Hoffman of New York, and Mark Overweg, Linda Disbennett and Kathy Overweg. Marcella had 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.


A visitation service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at Hartford Federated Church, 65418 Red Arrow Highway, Hartford, with a memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, at the same location. Arrangements are courtesy of Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford, with interment at Winchester Cemetery in Byron Center.
