John Peter Sell

April 14, 1934 — December 6, 2013


John Peter Sell of Sister Lakes was born on April 14, 1934, in Chicago, the son of Karl and Hedwig (Kaushe) Sell. John passed away at The Timbers of Cass County on Dec. 6, 2013.


John married the former Audrey Arnold on Aug, 10, 1957. and she survives along with their two sons, John Sell II and Eric (Merrie) Sell; two grandchildren, Ean and Bailey Sell; two nieces; Deidre (Roy) Freas and Mary Sell; four nephews, Dan (Dona) Sell, Tony (Lois) Sell, Martin (Mary) Sell and Warren (LuAnn) Sell and a family friend, Karen Cornell.


John was preceded in passing by his parents; a brother, Eckard Sell and a sister, Hanna Swortwood.


After graduating from Decatur High School in 1951, John attended Florence State College and Michigan State University. John enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 29, 1952, and served his country proudly during the Korean War, until he was honorably discharged on Aug. 24, 1955.


He worked as a carpenter doing general building as well as helping to build bridges. He was affiliated with numerous construction companies as well as architectural firms. Among them were Johnson-Klein, Guido Binda Architect and Tower Pinkster-Titus.


Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford, where at 8 p.m. a service to honor his memory will be held. Reverend Beth Reum from the Keeler United Methodist Church will officiate. Following the service, as to John's wishes, cremation will take place and a graveside service with full military rites will be held in the spring. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors or the Dowagiac District Library.
