James David Lewis

James David Lewis was born on Aug. 11, 1958, in Hartford, the son of James and Mary (Alexis) Lewis, both of whom precede him in passing. Also preceding him in passing was a brother, Michael Lewis.


James passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at West Woods of Bridgman, at the age of 64.


In his younger years, James enjoyed playing football and baseball. James started out his adult life by working at Modern Plastics of Benton Harbor, and then later on at Dana Products in Dowagiac. Most important to him was that he loved spending time with family and friends.


James is survived by ten brothers and sisters: Richard Lewis of Cheboygan, Mich., Dawn Rummage of Mayer, Ariz., Gail Miller of North Judson, Ind., William Lewis of South Bend, Ind., Gerry Lewis, Carol Lewis, Dean Lewis, and Dale Lewis, all of Stevensville, James Lewis of Grand Rapids, Mich., and John Pokagon of Hartford. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.


The family will welcome friends from noon-1 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 19, at the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, where at 1 p.m., a Native American ceremony to honor his memory will commence. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Caring Circle of Corewell Health Lakeland or the American Cancer Society.
