Grethel Ozell Stafford Herron, 92, resident of Somerville, Tenn., and wife of the late Arley “Red” Herron, departed this life Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, 2021, at her home.
Grethel was born Dec. 14, 1928 in McKenzie, Tenn., the daughter of the late Jiles Edgar Stafford and Mary Lee Rochell Stafford. She was a resident of Keeler/Hartford, Mich., for 66 years, Coloma, for 16 years, and Somerville, for 11 years. Grethel was employed as a cook for Hartford Public Schools before her retirement and enjoyed gardening and raising children, not just her own but watching over children in their neighborhood.
Grethel was a charter member of the Keeler General Baptist Church in Keeler and served the Lord for 78 years. She was a prayer warrior of the church and a member of the Eastern Star. She loved reading, especially the Bible, and true stories of important people and poetry.
Mrs. Herron is survived by two daughters: Patricia Herron of Somerville, and Wanda Herron of Somerville; her son, Dan Herron (Mary Tate Herron) of Somerville; and her nephew, David Johnson of Whiteville, Tenn.
In addition to her husband, and parents; she was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Stafford Green, and her husband, Jack; and two brothers: Bille Stafford and Phillip Stafford.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford, where at 1 p.m. the service to honor Grethel’s memory will commence. Pastor Steven Bisbee of the Hartford General Baptist Church will officiate. Grethel will be laid to rest next to her husband, Red, in Keeler Cemetery.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be JR Lewis, Mark Banic, Derek Banic, Michael Tate, David Johnson and C. Allen Davis.
