Duane was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Bangor, the son of L. Reed and Mary (Boyer) Cook, both of whom precede him in passing. Also preceding him in passing were a sister, Evelyn Dorkoski; and a brother, Roger Cook.

Duane was a graduate of Bangor High School, where he was strongly active in athletic activities. He started working at Standard Electronics, which later became Adams Electronics before it closed. In his spare time, he coached Little League and enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, hunting, and watching his children and grandchildren play sports.
