Caroline Julia Matthews

Caroline Julia Matthews, 79, of Hartford passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Hanson Hospice Center, Stevensville.


Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet, of which she was a member. Father John Peter and Father Donald Wieber will be the celebrants. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 20, 2014, at Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford, where liturgical prayers will be recited at 7 p.m.


Caroline was born April 1, 1934, in Paw Paw Township, the youngest of six children to Walter and Anna (Halik) Bulat. The family moved to Hartford two years later. Caroline graduated from Hartford High School in 1952. On May 19, 1956, she married Guy L. Matthews Jr., and they spent 39 years together on a farm in Hartford. She retired in January 1999 from Ausco Products (Auto Specialties) after 25 years of service.
After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, working in the yard with the help of numerous cats and taking care of her goat, Lopsey. She enjoyed attending Bible study, was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Altar and Rosary Society, and helped out with funeral luncheons.


Caroline is survived by two daughters: Caroline Denise (Steve) Sells of Hartford and Lisa (Orville Floyd) of Watervliet; grandchildren: Lindsey (Eric) Smith of Plainwell and Matthew Sells of Hartford; a sister, Stella Shal of Muncie, Ind.; three nephews; seven nieces; and numerous grand-nieces and grandnephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy, in January 1996; her parents; sisters, Julia Pittman and Emily Gembicki; brothers, Henry Bulat and Mike Bulat; and nephew, Michael Paluch. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Altar Society, Hospice at Home or Al-Van Humane Society of South Haven.
