Alice Elizabeth Bachman

Alice Elizabeth Bachman, 97, of Hartford passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at Golden Age Manor, Stevensville.

Alice was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Boyne City, Mich., the daughter of Morris and Lizzie (Grammel) Snyder, both of whom preceded her in passing. Alice was the last survivor of their nine children. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on Feb. 23, 2005, and a son, Ronnie, in 1963.

Alice moved to St. Joseph after she graduated from Boyne City High School. She and Don met at the Shadowland Ballroom and soon afterward married on June 18, 1939. She retired from Van Buren State Bank after many years of loyal employment. She also volunteered at Lakeland Community Hospital, Watervliet, as an auxiliary well into her 80s, working in the gift shop and doing the bookkeeping. In her spare time, she loved watching baseball, especially her children, grandchildren and the great-grandchildren, and also her beloved Detroit Tigers. She was on a bowling league, loved to golf with her late husband and was a member of the Mothers Club of Hartford.

Alice is survived by three children: Pat (Jim) Empson of Traverse City, Terry Bachman of Kalamazoo and Rick (Ernestine) Bachman of Hartford; eight grandchildren: Kelly Richards, Kimberly (Pete) Root, Kevin Empson, Terri Bachman, Amy (Ray) Gendron, Aaron Elizabeth (Todd) Valdes, Anne (Matt) Smith and Andy (Krissy) Bachman; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will welcome friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, where the service to honor her memory will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, with Pastor Jeff Williams of Hartford United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Alice's name be made to the Hartford Council for Recreation.
